Solidarity Rock is a Canadian Non-Profit seeking cultural exchange between musicians and artists in Cuba and abroad. We support Cuban musicians by bringing them much needed gear that allows them to play and to create their own bands as well as independence in recording and distributing their own music.
As an organization we are interested in music, not politics, so we'll leave political sentiment to the musicians.
We have done the first Rock tour in cuba by a foreign band and have returned with gear and documented their movement. We return again in October and December.

In our quest to take this thing to the next level, to increase awareness, and to get as many awesome people on board Solidarity rock is coming to Calgary for a party at The Palomino. There will be drinks and bands and fun and the opportunity to get involved with a sweet movment. Jenny The Falklands SLATES (Turbo Jamz)(formerly the coffin ships) @ The Palomino on 7th Ave Some of you know about it and some of you don't but I hope, and everyone involved in Solidarity Rock hopes to change that very soon. Basically the idea is to foster a spirit of artistic exchange between musicians in Cuba and Canada. We are truly blessed to live in an advanced industrialized nation where opportunity is presented to us at every turn. Unfortunately it is not the same in Cuba. Making music there is not easy, in fact, it is quite difficult. But with just a little bit of support from everyone who is either making music or enjoying music here we can help create opportunity for the people in Cuba who are literally battling to have their music heard. You can hear it straight up from my main man in Cuba Mr. William Garcia by checking out this vdeo here: http://vimeo.com/5927676 . Please check out this video, it really says it all. So anyways, for all my peeps in Calgary, we are having a fundraising show at The Palomino on Saturday Aug. 15th with The Falklands and Slates. All you have to do is show up. And if you have any old instruments collecting dust, please give them to us. We will make sure that they end up in the hands of Cuban musicians who will appreciate the gesture more than you could ever imagine. Solidarity Rock PS. I heard this event is sponsored by Havana Club Rum so there will probably be some insane drink specials.

On June 23, 2009, Drew McIntosh, Aaron Bocanegra and Chris Rechner will be traveling to Cuba to document rock and roll and hip hop in 4 cities. On the trip, they will be interviewing Cuban underground musicians, lending support by sharing information, knowledge and tools to create their music, documenting punk and hip hop shows and generally having a great time. Video soon after we return!

Friday, June 19, 2009 SLATES (AKA Coffin Ships - New name, same great taste) The Get Down (Rock crushes roll) CLAW (New band guarenteed to kill, members of MBP, Bayonets!!! and a bunch o others) AA/Licensed Come one come all to witness Edmonton's finest reaching out to make the world a better place. All money raised at this show will go towards bringing instruments and promise to rock bands in the centre of Cuba. We're also going to be accepting donations of used instruments, guitar strings, picks and the like. If you've got old cymbals you don't use, an old kick pedal, guitar, bass or amp, you should consider donating it to Solidarity Rock. We'll put it in the hands of bands without. We'll be bringing some of it a week later, and shipping the rest this summer. Check out the Solidarity Rock group for some gnarley pictures of Cuban punk bands playing with old soviet gear. Luisito is the singer of ACR, a band from Sancti Spiritus. This is what he has to say about Solidarity Rock. I know some of the people involved in this Solidarity Rock project. Hopefully they will remain strong there too, fighting for them and for us. It's great that people like us in other places worry about what we do here, support us in one way or another to continue moving here, and work with us whenever possible. It's great that through this project today we have the equipment necessary to make our videos as well as a documentary, so people can see what we do. This motivates us to continue working. It is a privilege because there were bands here in Sancti Spiritus, who could do these things and this is a good experience. It is important that through this project bands can come and play with us because we are always playing with bands here and it is important to maintain this cultural exchange, I believe that great things can come out of this.
