Solidarity Rock works to partner Canadian and Cuban musicians and artists. Through cross-cultural exchange, benefit shows, music tours and art shows, Solidarity Rock is helping create a base for Rock and Roll in Cuba and strengthening community and expanding possibilities for everyone involved in both countries.

Solidarity Rock began after Documentary filmmaker Drew McIntosh accompanied Edmonton indie rock band 7and7is on their groundbreaking tour of the country. they were the first foreign DIY rock band to tour the country. Even big bands like Sepultura and Audio Slave, when they played in Cuba didn't make it any further than Havana. When the tour was finished, Drew began working with William Garcia in Sancti Spiritus. They threw together a fundraising show at the Artery in Edmonton, and 7and7is, Bayonetts, Mark Birtles Project and 40 Thieves helped raise money to send a small package to Cuba. That package lead to more stuff and more shows.

After a few visits to Cuba, a bunch of Solidarity Rock shows in Edmonton, a road trip to Calgary and a show in Los Angeles, we found ourselves on tour in Cuba with SLATES. This tour was much different than the first experience, and it's amazing to see how the 7and7is trip broke the ice for the movement to really flourish. We traveled from Havana to Moron, playing shows everywhere in between. We were based in our Cuban home Sancti Spiritus again, and it was a good time for everyone.

Now, we've welcoming a new chapter in the Solidarity Rock story, with a new group starting in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Working together to make the world a better place is our goal, and it looks like we're succeeding.
